File: 25 KB, 550x159, 84-199.jpg PASS / FAIL Thread Anonymous Sun Jan 25 20: Let's have a pass/fail thread. Post your recent purchases from any stores, harbor fraught, etc. Use it for a while and post here if pass / fail.
I'll start: Stanley Wire Stripper: What the shit is this thing? The jaws are hard to open and close its frustrating I ended up cutting instead of stripping the wire. Verdict: FAIL! Anonymous Sun Jan 25 20: File: 10 KB, 300x225, 41cgVB+bsVL.SX300.jpg DwD024K Drilled 20 holes in concrete so far. Requires a bit of 'strong push' on hard concrete. No problems so far. Has a nice bounce in it.
Cons: Depth stop is too simple (no markings) Verdict: PASS Anonymous Sun Jan 25 20: File: 28 KB, 280x357, hbr51.jpg have the same set of wire strippers, lube the pivot a bit. Learn to use it more carefully. Seriously I love these things, the metal is thicker than your average set of wire strippers, and the handles much more comfortable than many of the other sets I've tried. I'll post this, these used to be sold as home depots husky house brand, but they dropped them for some reason, great for working in small spaces, you can stick a 1/4 inch bit in the 1/4 inch side facing either direction, and it comes with an adapter to use a 1/4 inch socket in the 5/16ths side. Obviously you can use each side directly on 1/4 or 5/16 ths sheet metal screws, has a very fine ratchet action and can deal with a surprising amount of torque. Original manufacturer is VIM and you can find it on amazon for under 20$.

Gearwrench makes a slightly larger version that isn't bad, and lowes sells one thats the same size but instead of using spring clips to hold the bits in place it uses really shitty ring magnets. Anonymous Sun Jan 25 20: File: 14 KB, 640x384, 10939prev.jpg Stanley Bolt Cutter (red handle) Tried cutting a protruding 1' nail with it. Ended up marring the jaws. I guess they didn't temper the jaws.
Anonymous Sun Jan 25 21: surprising. Stanley quality just keeps slipping Anonymous Sun Jan 25 22: Yea, any brand of strippers like that suck. Buy a separate pair of strippers, cutters and crimpers. Anonymous Sun Jan 25 22: File: 37 KB, 680x200, nest of saws.jpg Stanley 3 in 1 'nest of saws' It was offered at a sale price and gave it a shot. Real woodworkers might laugh at this because of plastic handle. I've tried cutting several 2x4's for making a workbench and it cuts fast and clean.
I just let the blade do the work and I can make straight cuts like a jigsaw with these. PASS Anonymous Sun Jan 25 22: File: 18 KB, 300x200, $35.jpg I went against all of your advice and bought a shitty bunnings weldcorp MIG because it came with a trolley and an auto darkening helmet. I've barely even used it and i can say it it below my already low expectations, as it overheats so much and is fucking impossible to do anything on because of that. Verdict: fail Anonymous Sun Jan 25 23: File: 196 KB, 800x800, 1000x1000.jpg Mate was silly enough to buy their shit.
He had problems as do many others. Anonymous Sun Jan 25 23: A 9' Southbend lathe is posted locally for $500. But but I have no space for it hnnngh Anonymous Sun Jan 25 23: File: 55 KB, 1051x307, 84-389.jpg Stanley 84-389 Yeah it bites all right but once it bites the workpiece you can't remove it.
The so-called 'comfort' grip at the bottom is blocking the eject lever. You can't push the eject lever enough to release the bite. Solution is to remove the 'comfort' grips making it look like an 'Irwin Vise-grip' brand. But 'fixes' are not allowed so.
Anonymous Mon Jan 26 03: I only buy used tools. Generally for a fraction of their retail prices.

Anonymous Mon Jan 26 05: File: 12 KB, 181x300, SP3pump.jpg The jaws are hard to open and close its frustrating I ended up cutting instead of stripping the wire. Oil it you dolt. Anonymous Mon Jan 26 05: File: 54 KB, 800x181, 74012004k.jpg Knipex 74-10-200 Cost 26$ I bought them to replace my used and completely abused ChannelLock 338 diagonals.
In fact I was going to buy another pair of 338s, when I saw the Knipex sitting right next to them. I havent had much time to really use them too much, but man they feel really quality.
Im not foreseeing any real problems with them, but then again they were also 6$ more than the USA made channellocks. Id give them a pass.
Anonymous Mon Jan 26 05: File: 28 KB, 500x500, plato0.jpg Had pic related for years. Anonymous Mon Jan 26 05: File: 68 KB, 500x500, 4212.pt01-1-500x500.jpg bought 8in harbor freight drill press it had probably 5mm of runout, the drive pully was unbalanced making the motor shake, vibrating the whole machine making a loud knocking sound. returned it and bought this. Wen 10' drill press, was 99$ Has a laser which is neat. I did a lot of eyeballing, and it is a rebadged SKIL 3320 (few very minor differences like the crank handle and knobs are different shape, literally everything important is the same I took pictures and looked at them IRL, there was also a 'performax' badged one that was the same too, looking on amazon there are a few other rebadges.) I saw on amazon the skil got a ton of really good reviews as it was a bestseller, wen had less review but they were still mostly positive.
I bought the Wen over the Skil because one store had the Wen on sale for $99 and the other store had the Skil for $150. Its really smooth, quiet, and I cannot see any runout with the naked eye. After squaring everything up it does not noticeably waller out holes. To me, you have to really temper your expectations with such a cheap and small drill press, but this thing looks to be more than adequate and precise for a benchtop model.
I was actually appalled at how bad the Harbor Freight 8in model was. I must have gotten a very bad example. Either way, Pass for being a cheap but decent benchtop drill press. Anonymous Mon Jan 26 05: File: 120 KB, 875x1500, 818rf-Q0abL.SL1500.jpg Anonymous Mon Jan 26 10: File: 15 KB, 420x420, 364714RZ00.jpg Absolutely had to have a plane on very short notice hours after any normal place had shut. These planes are both shit: - the blades are blunt - there is no cap iron - the cap is hollow, presumable stamped - the bodies are made of U-section - the bases are painted, therefore obviously haven't been lapped - the product's obviously intended to be babby's first plane, but ships uncalibrated, with the blades in backwards Verdict: FAIL; borderline-PASS with a lot of work. Anonymous Mon Jan 26 11: I would do that but most people in my area try to sell their old tools at or nearly at the cost of retail. '$50 dollars for very used 6ft fiberglass ladder?, fuck that.'
Or shit like people selling the multimeters harbor freight gives away or sells for 5 bucks for 10-15. Anonymous Mon Jan 26 15: eBay is absolutely flooded with them, for very cheap. Am I correct in assuming they're fakes?
Anonymous Mon Jan 26 16: I know this feel. Very rarely is anything good on there, mostly shit that has been beaten completely to death or people wanting 20$ for a used harbor freight angle grinder. Anonymous Mon Jan 26 17: tl:dr Stanley tools blow Anonymous Mon Jan 26 18: Their cheap wrenches and socket sets arent horrible for the price. Fatmax and the Made in USA with Global materials shit like some of their utility knives and tape measures are also decent tools for the price.
I really like their screwdrivers too, but I dont have any because I have two full screwdrivers sets already. A Snap on one and a Pratt Read set. Anonymous Mon Jan 26 18: reduce your amps. Fyi, anything that you can lift by yourself is only for thin sheet work. Anonymous Mon Jan 26 18: I feel you bro. People try to sell their tools in australia above the price of retail. wanted some sash clamps so badly.
looking at kids selling their grandparents tools because too old 6ft rusty as fuck sash clamps for 50$ each 24$ at the hardware store for something rigid and made of mild steel I-section Anonymous Mon Jan 26 18: TFW I sold extra surplus tools on CL before I moved. Fucking 6 ton bottle jack? Just fucking take it. Anonymous Mon Jan 26 19: File: 45 KB, 800x800, knipex.jpg Knipex 71-12-200 Cost. 48 bucks on amazon This is by far the strongest cutting tool ive ever owned next to my grinder. I use it with bicycle repairs. I can cut any wire lock with ease and it cuts through rusted up chains like butter.
We have it at work aswell. On the third year. After cutting at least 300 chains.
50 cable locks and a gazillion gear/brakelines. And of course the odd m5/m6 bolts and various random parts. You should have gotten the big one. This is a definite pass.
